They are actually venomous like a gila monster lizard, plus have extra virulent bacteria in their saliva. They will bite large prey like an ox and then track it for days as it slowly dies from the poison. They were once smaller but being confined to an island has produced giantism, common in reptiles. They are on the endangered list, not helped by the fact they are cannibals with an extremely high rate of youngster fatality.

Watched a documentary on this lizard. They kill their prey by biting it which injects a poison into the victim. it takes days for it to die a slow painful death. Odd this was left out of the text. Too gruesome?
