In old norse people called themselves vikings when they went raiding, which was to go 'a viking'. They were farmers primarily but due to lack of good farming they went 'a viking' for resources which included animals, resources and people as slaves. Beowulf's explanation is not the best.

The question is not entirely correct. They spoke multiple languages depending what country they were from. Danish was among those languages.
