Who started calling German Shepherds ‘Alsatian Wolf Dogs’?

I've heard people calling them Alsatians but never the wolf dog bit. When I was younger ( in my late 60's now) I seem to remember shorter coated dogs being called Alsatians and the longer, rougher coated ones being German Shepherds.
