What was the name of the first commercial jet airliner?

Let’s not forget Sir Frank Whittle who developed the jet engine as used on the Comet and by extension all of today’s jet engined aircraft.

Wasn't it the Comet which suffered catastrophic failures which they eventually traced to metal fatigue of the fuselage? Metal fatigue wasn't previously known.
