The explanation of phonetic alphabets is accurate. The NATO phonetic alphabet replaced the American alphabet. The words are considered more international. Any piece about World War II (Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, Sands of Iwo Jima, etc.) will use the old system.

As a radio operator of many years i have neve heard of anything but Echo for e. I don't see why anybody would try to confuse things by changing any of the code words. Alpha, Beta, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel.
