YoungAtHeart, actually that's not really surprising considering that the genus names are commonly known as the scientific name or Latin name. As we all know, French is a romance language meaning it was derived from the Latin language. Considering most of South America speaks Spanish or Portuguese (both are romance languages) then it makes sense that the Europeans would use the name that the imported fruit was introduced to them by. They would have no need to modify a word that was already in existence. The word "pineapple" is a more modern name used mostly to describe the fruit, i.e. it looks like a pinecone and is sweet like an apple. It is mostly likely that the word was coined from something very similar to that phrase.
