Caesar was not dictator from 49 BC to 44 BC, that would've been an entire 5 years. He was only dictator for about a year, having been granted that power by the senate just a year prior to his death. In 44 BC he was declared "Dictator in perpetuum" or Dictator for life, which is what got him killed.
