I’ve had hamsters for over 20 years, got my first one in about 2002 when away at college. I like the Syrians best as a species, they’re easier to hold than dwarfs too. They are so freaking cute and so soft and fit perfectly in your hand. I’m taking a break from owning a hamster at the moment because my last two died on the younger side and it was heartbreaking. It’s best to get a hamster from an ethical breeder than in the pet stores. They’re much healthier from breeders. I’ll get one from a breeder for my next hamster. They’re such wonderful pets in my opinion but need a lot more space than most people give them. I have a 75 gallon tank for one hamster and it’s still a bit small. Females require more space than males and they can be harder to please at times. I honestly don’t care if mine are male or female, though females will get a slight odor sometimes when they’re in heat. As long as you have a largest enough enclosure for them they should be pretty happy.
