In Australia, what type of animal is referred to as a 'freshie'?

BonBon, Yes, plenty of things, it's a great place to live. Fun fact though, Australia is one of the few countries where most of the snakes are venomous. Another Fact, Saltwater crocodiles are called Salties (what else 😂)

watch for the crocodile's snout. Freshies have relatively thin snouts. Salties, man-eaters have broader snouts.

Imagine visiting Australia and someone yells, "Hey! There is a freshy in the poor, mate!" You think they mean refreshments while you swim and you get excited.
