They can live up to 80 years. They have been looking after them and relocating onto islands where there are no predators like stoats, feral cats or dogs. They are slowly starting to recover.

I lived, traveled, and taught in New Zealand for a year but only saw a kakapo in a zoo there.

Douglas Adams wrote about them in his book "Last Chance To See." He got to visit their island sanctuary. Highly recommend this book.
