Who was the original choice for the voice of Paddington Bear in the 2014 film "Paddington"?

Gilbert Godfrey would have been a really interesting choice. Probably spelled the last name wrong but you get it .

Great actor, have loved him since his Mr Darcy days in Pride & Prejudice.
