I have Beta Thalassemia and so does 1 of my 3 children. I am always tired and run down and I have shortness of breath when active. I have only had a few blood transfusions in my life for it. Taking iron supplements just makes it worse.

Melode, Iron deficiency anemia is not the same as Thalassemia

Lorraine , Just going by the info given above, I understood that for beta, a child would have to have genes from both parents.

this condition affects 1 in 7 Asians, 1 in 15 Africans, and 1 in 5000 Europeans. I am of Anglo African heritage and when my daughter was diagnosed with thalassemia B trait, a doctor said she got it from me. After blood tests it was found she inherited it from her white European father, the 1 in 5000.
