Mitochondrial DNA is present in every cell. There are hundreds to thousands of copies of mtDNA in each cell, compared to only two copies of nuclear DNA. In forensics, Mitochondrial DNA is useful for identifying old bones, hair shafts with no root, and teeth where nuclear DNA is too degraded to be used. It is often used in mass casualty situations to make identifications more quickly than with traditional DNA.

I have learned a great deal by watching shows like Forensic Files, and many more criminology shows. To some DNA is a godsend, to others it's one way in which human beings are targeted in a bad way.
