I I actually got to live there for 13 months. It is absolutely beautiful so much to see and do. Summer is beautiful, although it doesn't really get dark. try putting a three-year-old to sleep who keeps saying it's not night time yet. During Winter I would drive out and we would just watch the Aurora borealis , it's just beautiful. And I made it a point to see every lighthouse around the East,West and Southern coast of Iceland. And so many waterfalls. Polar plunge as well. And please go to the blue lagoon you will not be disappointed.

Fredrico, I took advantage of Icelandair's offer to stopover in Reykjavik at no extra charge on way to Amsterdam. Unfortunately, didn't know all that Iceland had to offer till way too late. Missed too much.

carrie lea, They remind me of the root cellars that are still visible in rural parts of Newfoundland, where settlers kept their potatoes, turnips and parsnips away from winter's frost. There was no refrigeration in those days.

Alana, sounds fantastic. would love to visit Iceland for a year, although, even as a Canadian.. the winters seem like they'd be too cold for my liking

Early settlers in the American Midwest built sod houses. Weren't a lot of trees in the prairies. I wonder if there were more ants and bugs in the house?

I was looking for "Norway" as an option among the choices. I was fascinated to see this done during my vacation there in 1995.

Back in the 70s some people in the West part of USA built earth houses that are partially built into a side of a hill and the roof if covered in turf. Actor Dennis Weaver built a similar eco friendly home.
