What does the prefix 'RMS' mean when used before the name of a sea vessel?

I was fortunate enough to dive the H.M.S. Rhone off the salt island in the carribean. A mail ship that became overload by passengers trying to escape the horror of the sea.I still think that the captain's tea spoon is still there.
