I bet they are studying these benefit humans, or at least the rich.

It’s one of nature’s paradoxes - she makes them awesomely ugly but then gives immunities and long life

I prefer not to worry about living longer than 100 years old, but without pain so maybe examine this rat to help man live pain free.

Testing an animal's pain limit and how long they can survive without oxygen is incredibly cruel. Imagine if we imposed that on humans! in fact I'm guessing there are many mole-rats out there far more useful and intelligent than many of the humans I've met.

It would be nice not to age, enjoying all the benefits of youth, but imagine what an overpopulated world would look like if we don't die.

If an animal doesn't age, couldn't they theoretically live forever?

Sulley, I’m guessing some of their unusual traits (like senior females still having litters, or the pain tolerance that might be a gift to compensate for being creatures with no hair, fur, feathers or scales to protect their skin from litter-mates with sharp teeth and claws…) were probably observed naturally, rather than through torturous experimentation.

I’m horrified to think what kind of sadistic experiments were done to find out all this information. I’m even more horrified to see that the vast majority of comments are basically saying “keep torturing them to benefit us”. It’s amazing how many people think it’s ok to hurt and even kill somebody as long as you have something to gain from it.

This is incorrect. They do age. but for a rodent thier lifespan is exceptionally long.

TWeezyA, You want to take advantage of this animal without exploiting it in any way. I'd love to know how that's done.

BIOLOGY 101: Naked Mole rat DNA is NOT compatible with human DNA. I believe the stats are accurate that show the US at the bottom of all First World countries in Science and Math when I read the hysterical, fantastical comments here.

I wonder & hope they’re studying this animal for humans to live with at least minimal pain & slow aging!! Albeit, without risk whatsoever to the animal! Every living organism has 1 or more useful reasons they’re on this beautiful big planet of ours! I don’t care what it is; it’s here for one reason or another to help whatever ecosystem it lives in whether native or even invasive. Evasion of any breathing organism is only harmful when they invade in insurmountable numbers, even us!!

Vangee, what about breathing? I would think that they'd be breathing in a lot of dust if the soil was dry. I don't know maybe they go lower where's more moist, but then, where do they get the air from?
