Sarah, I was fascinated to learn this, though from my brief “research” (aka googling), they are born with a sort of cartilage kneecap, which develops into bone over time through ossification. (lol, the patella has long been my favorite bone - I know, I know, I’m a weirdo - so I was delighted to learn this new fact about them. Thank you!)
