She is an answer in the NYT crossword occasionally but I was never sure who she was. I believe the clue is "WWI operative" NOW I know!

The most significant part of Mata Hari’s story has been completely ignored in this ridiculously abbreviated account of her life. During WW1 she had an affair with a German officer and became a spy for Germany. She was tried, convicted and executed by firing squad in France in October 1917.
