Rizal is very famous in Philippines because he already known as the national hero in Philippines.

Chesca, The Spaniards thought that he was the leader of the revolutionary group because also of his writings particularly the two famous novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, which are about the tyranny of the Spanish government who ruled the Philippines for about 333 years.

Celso, Lapu-lapu is just one of the many national heroes in the Philippines but Rizal is the main symbol of nationalism that is why he is said the be the national hero (like when we say Tinikling is the national dance, Mango is the national fruit, Narra is the national tree, Bangus is the national fish, etc.). Lapu-lapu may be the first national hero as he was the leader who fought Magellan and his men during the Spaniards first attempt to colonize us (even though it was not really Lapu-lapu who beheaded Magellan during the fight; it was one of his men but since he was the leader, the success was attributed to him). Bonifacio, Emilio Aguinaldo, Marcelo del Pilar, Melchora Aquino, to name a few are considered national heroes in our Philippine history.
