What can 'shin splints' evolve into?

I got shin splints from running in the streets where I grew up. It was part of our P.E. (physical education) class, and at that time there were only Vans or Converse Chuck Taylor style tennis shoes to use. Neither were designed for long distance running.

It’s an easy question when you are suffering from the condition as you answer, but it still hurts.
