Ewa, I had never heard of a xaphoon, so I looked it up and then proceeded to look up double reed instruments and it listed the bassoon as a double reed. I'm not sure what your daughter was doing.

Wendy, when I played the oboe, the two reeds were not glued together, but were simply clamped together. Of course, this was 50 years ago, so my memory may well be out-of-date.

Bonehead, double reed instruments are woodwinds which include oboe, English horn and bassoon. The two reeds are glued together and are not connected to a mouthpiece. Single reed instruments are connected to a mouthpiece like clarinets and the saxophone family of woodwinds.
