nimblemoon, dogs give nothing but love and devotion requiring nothing in return but our company and some food. I would take that over the emptiness of humanity any day.

My Afghan Hound's favorite game at the dog park was to run up to the guy holding the tennis ball and get him to throw it.... then pretend she didn't know what to do. She'd then see how many times he'd fetch the ball and throw it for her again. The real dumb ones would do it all day long... she thought it was hilarious.

Montana Lady, that describes my dog to a tee. He'll run to where the ball is thrown and then waits for me to catch up & to throw it again. Bring it back? no bloody way. he just likes running to it, that's it.

My schnauzer expects people to chase him until eventually you catch up and grab ahold of the toy in his mouth. His favorite game, made extra funny by him biting down on the toy as he runs so that the toy squeaks.

Retrievers would be more accurate. Dogs do not fetch because they're innate hunters. They fetch because when humans domesticated dogs we had them retrieve things. 95% of the time it was for hunting; however being hunters is not why dogs fetch. Lots of pups were trained to retrieve things that weren't game. Dogs fetch because we taught them to. Domesticated dogs aren't hunters in the sense the question implies. Theyre helpers.

MetallicEnsign27753, I can relate. My husband died. I love dogs, but currently have two cats. I rescued one of my cats, who was scheduled to be euthanized the next morning. I just could not allow that to happen. I thought I was saving his life, but he has saved my sanity. Whenever I feel down, he is there cuddling, nudging me, and just letting me know I am not alone and he cares.

l've had cats that would play fetch, but after a while they'd get bored and stop. Cats have a strong hunting instinct as well.
