As a black person who has for the past 50 years celebrated Black History Month every February, Watch Night Service (every New Year's Eve to commemorate the slaves waiting for Emancipation on Jan 1), MLK Day, May Day (when slaves in Florida learned they were free), and Juneteenth, and I have NEVER heard of this holiday.

National Freedom Day is an observance, not a holiday. it's a remembrance and a commemoration. Nobody gets the day off.

rudy, I'm believing nobody has heard of this holiday. Looking at Google, it was signed into law on June 30, 1948 by President Harry Truman. Older than I am.

Flanker814, I get it! It's because of the groundhog seeing it's shadow! Lol

Rashad, I think he was a man of principle. Could it be that he really didn't approve of slavery?

The United Kingdom abolished slavery in the United Kingdom before the Revolutionary War. They allowed it to continue in the Colonies because they controlled the pricing of commodities. That was one of the reasons for the Revolutionary War. The Southern states refused to fight with the Northern states if slavery was to be abolished. Slavery has existed for thousands of years. Slavery has been a most hideous flaw in human nature.

IckyEra2, Can you share the name of the movie Prof. Paco referred to? This holiday proclamation was put in place by president Truman on June 30, 1948. I can't think of any films near that time that were about the 13th amendment.

The unspoken “holiday”…?!?!

Lincoln "freed" my enslaved African ancestors, not out of the kindness of his heart, but because of political reasons. I wish "slaves" wasn't used without mentioning that they were Africans. The word "slaves", because of this, has automatically become synonymous with black people. The slaves, slaves this and slaves that.

CrownKis1994, Reply from Prof. Paco: This holiday came about after a movie on how Lincoln gathered enough votes to pass the 13th admendment in early 1865 before he was assassinated on Good Friday April 14. No body gets the day off. Like Sept 17 Constitution Day. O.K.

MALICE, there are so many odd "holidays", probably at least one every day, it's hard to know all of them.
