When ice lenses form within layers of peat, it causes the ground to rise and form a platform called a "palsa." Thus far, most of the planetary warming has taken place at the poles. The collapse of these palsas is a powerful indication that the permafrost is thawing at a frightening rate.

This is really not funny. The trees are tilting and tipping over because the permafrost beneath them has thawed. The rapidly thawing permafrost is one of the biggest threats to life on earth. There are gigatons of carbon and methane in the tundras of the north. As the permafrost thaws, it releases carbon dioxide and methane, two extremely powerful greenhouse gases, into the atmosphere. The more gases released, the more the planet heats up, and even more permafrost melts. It's a self-perpetuating cycle. Add ocean warming, which releases water vapor, another potent greenhouse gas. These two things alone can kill this planet and everyone on it.
