Unfortunately, we are infallible human beings who make mistakes. Since this was not a deliberate act, it's hard to make extreme judgements about what happened. Yes, it is extremely sad that so many people lost their lives on March 27, 1977. Hopefully, some major changes have been made in Aviation, over the years, so that this tragedy will not happen today.

Player #62086564, Sadly, this was deliberate. The pilot of the KLM flt ignored protocol and made the decision to take off without clearance from the tower. He was stopped once by his first officer and engineer, but the second effort, he insisted that "We go." Hence the omission of the "hierarchy" in the cockpit.

It was made worse by the fact that the airport had no radar. Furthermore Tenerife airport then was on the north side of the island and at a fairyhigh altitude. A new airport in the south of the island has since been built and at a lower altitude

Player #81950636, he didn't deliberately want to crash. they had no clue the other plane wasn't clear of the runway. it was impatience as he wanted to get home and not have to stay. the main airport had been closed due to a bomb threat, or bomb and all flights had been redirected to tenerife until the main airport reopened. when it reopened, dense fog was rolling in which could further delay them and they didn't want that either. he refueled at tenerife so he could unload at the main airport and go. that also contributed to the amount of fatalities.

The pilot from Pan Am and the air traffic controller tried to tell the KLM flight that Pan Am was still on the runway. They spoke at the same time and canceled each other out. the KLM flight didn't hear them.
