Damwic, This area was heavily impacted by the Chernobyl accident to some degree. Not sure how the radiation impact has dissipated but at the time, my professor of radiation chemistry was visiting the area and walked into a Swedish nuclear plant and set off alarms going into the plant. He had been measuring radioactive fallout for days before Russia did any reporting. And telling the locals not to drink cow or reindeer milk and fruits and veggies. He walked into the plant to warn the county of the unreported accident and had calculated the type of nuclear plant and isotopes fallout and estimated location based on his calculations. He did end up getting cancer within a few years .

So there is Lapland in Sweden too and I think Norway, The Sami people heard their reindeers and they are Scandinavian native, they speak the same language with different dialects. Their reindeer heard's are in the 100's if not 1000's. They use the whole animal so the meat, skin and even the antlers. Meat for food, skin for clothes and antlers for mugs, plates and other things you need in a household. They do very beautiful intricate art and they are very good with carving in antlers or wood and making clothes. They are a minority and have their own language that have been recognised by the state. Where they live in the Arctic circle they have daylight from May to end of September and very few hours of daylight in the other half of the year. They trade their reindeers, meat and skin etc and a lot of them own forrest so they trade in that too.
