Correct answer: Haiti
MataHari
Knodel1958,
The Tainos were indigenous to the island, so yes, Columbus got lost while headed to India, and instead of acknowledging his mistake, they decided to call the whole region West India!
Yokasta
The first island discovered by Christopher Columbus was La Hispaniola

3,000,000 tainos when spanish arrived on the island. After 5 years only 300. the Spanish were cruel, and barbaric as they were when they landed in South America. They tortured the indigenous people for fun because they were not Christian. all with the support of the Catholic Church. who were the real barbarians?

Koplfer,

MataHari
Yokasta,
No the first island was Hayti, named by the Tainos people, indigenous of the island.
Columbus renamed it after queen Isabella's country who sponsored the trips.
Hispaniola means Pequeña Hespania (Little Spain).
MataHari
CoachBlank, The official island's name remains Haiti, shared by the two countries: Haitian Republic and Dominican Republic.
MataHari
CoachBlank, The Taino's name of the island is Hayti, Quisqueya or Boyo.
The western part was named Hayti by the Founders Fathers after the 1804 Revolution putting an end to the French colonialism and slavery.
That first black republic is still paying for that!
CoachBlank
Haiti is not an island. the island Hispanola that Columbus "discovered" (documented for a European nation) is shared with the Dominican Republic. Poorly worded question.
