When was the last time the US Congress passed any kind of major gun control laws to protect the public?

According to the NRA the problem is that there is a lack of guns in America. If every kid had a machine gun, then they could shoot anyone who they thought were about to shoot them, therefore avoiding mass killings. The correlation between the level of gun ownership and gun violence in the US compared to countries where gun ownership is rare seems lost on the NRA. Nobody outside the military has any legitimate use for an assault weapon.

It is hard to find the words to describe the American attitude to the right to bear arms. TheLadyKane says no law would prevent criminals owning guns, but along with education it might help bring down the number of mass shootings, and death of innocent children in the future.

The anti-gun folks like to use the term “assault” rifle to make them sound more sinister. The M-16, again for example, IS an assault rifle; what makes it an “assault” rifle is it’s ability to fire in a semi-automatic mode OR in a fully-automatic mode (yep, like the well-known machine gun); AR-15’s don’t do this, it’s semi-auto only. There are too many people in the US who feel just like Kane! That includes the person just elected for president. It will only get worse and our children in schools as well as the person simply doing their grocery shopping are all in danger every day. So sad this is a daily thing now....afraid to even go out our door!!

Player #33161631, In America, we have a constitutional right to bear arms...against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Which includes rogue governments. Look at history: the 1st thing dictators do is take everyone's guns (and burn their books). Then the only people armed are government minions and criminals. No laws will prevent criminals from having any firearms they want.
