What is the ingredient of Sardinian cheese "Casu marzu"?

Sounds absolutely horrible. Who wants to eat flies!!

So people see cheese that is mouldy or has live maggots in it, they smell putrid and they think - hey I will taste it anyway? Hmm not totally inedible, now we will make deliberately infected cheese and get people to buy it?! Not for me, thanks.

I understood that it is - once was - illegal in the USA. Can anyone confirm or contradict this for me? Thanks.
