SueA, If you live long enough you may realize US is different from most countries so imagine they would want different names. just saying. !!!

Miss Sue, because it was named football(logically because the players kick the ball with their foot) by the country that invented it - England. I have no idea why the US call their game football as it rarely touches the player’s foot. It is much more like Rugby except our rugby players don’t have all that padding but like your American football they run with the ball in their hands and only touch it with their foot when scoring (or trying to score) a goal. Your game should have been called American rugby as it makes more sense. Soccer comes from “assoc”the shortened term for association as in association football.

Well over 90% of the world calls the game referred to in the question calls it football. USA is different in that what they call football is an entirely different game. So they call the game soccer.

toothless beachrat, just watched it on YouTube. It was a epic kick and there was no one in the stands to see it! But it’ll live forever on YouTube

Indeed a phenomenal accomplishment. I scored a few from midfield while playing as a field player, but for a ball to even travel that far is mind boggling. I'm going to have to find a clip of the kick, I don't recall hearing about this when it occurred.
