I used to work for a local NBC TV station back in the days when Jerry Lewis hosted the telethons for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The broadcasts were held every year during Labor Day weekend. The national broadcast was live across the country, but they had 15-minute windows every hour for the local affiliates to do their own live fundraising. One year, in the early 1980s, a few months before the telethon, Jerry Lewis did a promotional tour to all the station affiliates and those of us working the crew got to meet him. I found him to be a gentle, selfless, quiet, and engaging man. It was quite a lot of work doing the telethons live as he did, and he worked through the entire 72 hour weekend with just a few rest breaks in between. Much respect for what he did; no one puts that much dedication into shows and causes like that anymore.
