Dog breeders, in their neverending quest to create the perfect dog have been breeding Cavalier King Charles Spaniels with smaller and smaller heads (to make the already large eyes look even bigger). The breed now suffers Chiari-like Malformation, an intensely painful condition where the brain is too large for the skull, and the brain stem is forced down into the top of the spinal column. The affected dogs scratch at their heads, necks, and shoulders and are extremely reluctant to be touched. Some dogs must be euthanized.

lady ia an American Cocker Spaniel which is different to a Cocker Spaniel and looks more like a large King Charles Cavalier Spaniel.
