From Wikipedia: Reckless developed arthritis in her back as she aged and injured herself on May 13, 1968, by falling into a barbed wire fence. She subsequently died the same day under sedation while her wounds were being treated. At the time of her death, she was estimated to be 19 or 20 years old.

Why no info about the horses demise? Was it killed in battle?!? Was it allowed to "retire" to a life of peaceful tranquility?!? What happened to the horse, and was it paid a pension for its care like we do now for retired military and police dogs?!?

Great horse, and well loved by Marines. She is buried at Camp Pendleton. There is a book out about her too. Definitely a good read. I believe there is 3 memorials dedicated to her. One in the Washington DC area at the Marine Corps Museum, one in California, and I believe one in Kentucky. I could be wrong though. Feel free to check it out. Truly an amazing horse
