What kind of meat is mutton?

Try buying mutton in an Australian supermarket - it is all marked and stamped as lamb. I've seen some large legs of lamb! Have to go to a butcher to get mutton.

Kiwozzie, yes I like mutton or hogget for stews and curries. But hard to get.

Cookie Bean, you're more likely to have heard the leader "mutton dressed as lamb"; i.e. something that is old being passed off as much younger.
