It was called indulgences, the canceling out of sin for enough money or favors. Martin Luther called the Catholic Church out on this issue and started Christianity on a whole different direction. The church has often failed the people, but there have often been those loyal to the Lord who have stood up for the truth.

Tracey , I agree, there are no gods. They are man-made, either physically (idols), mentally (mythology), or emotionally/spiritually (people exalted by people). But there is one God, who made all of heaven and earth and life. Even with the right chemicals no one has designed & created from scratch any plant or animal (DNA, DNA decoder, cells, etc.).
