What herb is also known as "Cilantro" or "Spanish Cilantro"?
Correct answer: Coriander

Chris RN
Arohanui, Married into a Mexican family I finally, after many years, developed a liking for cilantro. When I first tried it 45 years ago I thought it had the ‘fragrance’ of dirty socks. For me it definitely was an acquired taste!

Deb
I'm one of those, apparently few, people who hate cilantro. From what I've read, those of us who don't like it lack an enzyme or something that others have that affect how we perceive the taste elements in the plant causing it to taste icky...to us, anyway 😝

Sheriffe
Arohanui, It's in the genes literally as to how it tastes, I'm fortunate like you to love it

Jenny
Grew up in Texas and always called it cilantro. Moved to New Zealand and learned that they call it coriander.

Tina M.
Chris RN, I think cilantro adds so much great flavor to food. Great taste!

Patricia
I love coriander as a salad vegetable rather than lettuce, which I really don't like.

RushMama2112
Deb, me too. Tastes like soap. Ugh!

I thought it tasted like soap at first, but developed a liking for it.

This is called Synchronicity. Look for it. It is quite common. Books have been written about the incidents that defy the odds. Here’s mine that just happened today, in fact, with this question, just now. I’m re-reading Louise Penny’s Gamache series. I’m on #3 in a 15-odd book series. Looked up a word from her book this morning, wrote it down, adding it to hundreds of other words that are new to me. Yep, you guessed it. Just started playing this game a minute ago. Else I would have missed the answer. And I’m a Mexican, love cilantro, but this other word is new to me. Synchronicity.

joey

Tara Tippy., My daughter used cilantro in her homemade salsa. Just a small bit chopped fine is awesome. You really do not have to use a lot to flavor food.

There is a percentage of people who only taste SOAP when ingesting cilantro; I am one of them; both my children love it, tho.

We used to have an issue with Cilantro but found if you counterbalance it works wonders with flavor combinations. There are other counterbalancing agents that work very well, citric acids, coconut, certain spices, etc. Found playing around with this in the kitchen with different recipes is fun & flavorful.

Mars V
Either you love it or you hate it. Like Neil Diamond.

Ren
Didn’t know but I’m also Mexican

Deb, well… this info has been an eye opener for me. I’ve heard of many people disliking the taste of it and I could not understand why. As a matter of fact I was eating my lunch just now at work and took a bite of my cilantro and it tasted great! But now I know the reason.
I wonder what gen or enzyme I am missing that makes me say no to celery

Ewa
Chris RN, Nope, not for me and we have a child that's allergic to it. hahahah

Ririiiiiii

Deb, Some people have mutation on chromosome 11, there is change in one letter in DNA. For them, Cilantro tastes like soap.

Coriander is native to the Mediterranean Basin.[3]
It is a soft plant growing to 50 cm (20 in) tall. The leaves are variable in shape, broadly lobed at the base of the plant, and slender and feathery higher on the flowering stems.
The flowers are borne in small umbels, white or very pale pink, asymmetrical, with the petals pointing away from the centre of the umbel longer (5–6 mm or 3⁄16–1⁄4 in) than those pointing toward it (only 1–3 mm or 1⁄16–1⁄8 in long). The fruit is a globular, dry schizocarp 3–5 mm (1⁄8–3⁄16 in) in diameter.[4] Pollen size is approximately 30 μm (0.0012 in).[5]
