Julia
The Beaufort scale was developed over 200 years ago, before wind speed could be accurately measured by anemometers, and was originally defined by wind and wave effects. It was primarily of interest to navies and merchant shipping, with lower numbers limiting the speed of sailing vessels, and higher values indicating possible danger from high wind or rough seas.

Andrè, poor question and answer. The Beaufort scale only applies to tornados, hurricanes. Wind is measured with a different instrument, that spins around called an anemometer.

I remember the Beaufort scale from St10 Geography HG!
