According to some sources we did hunt them to extinction. That, along with other external forces, drove them to extinction. It's not a given among all scientists.

Like the Ghengis Khan question climate change was caused by him killing(not personally) so many people, maybe there were too many animals and people roaming around? Maybe there was an astronomical event?
