Ontario , the British Colony was named Upper Canada and Quebec the French colony , Lower Canada. This was based on the St. Lawrence River which ran up stream , " upper" to the Great Lakes from the Atlantic. Very cool that although Canada was colonized by the French and British it s name is derived from the natives
