I always assumed it was a chlorine compound, not just chlorine. ...Chlorine is a gas at room temperature. Update: it is here are some common compounds used according to the American Chemistry Council: sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite, lithium hypochlorite or chlorinated isocyanurates.

Player By-Tor, So that's why my sister and I had green hair! We walked a mile and a half across town to the swimming pool. I was 8 and my sister was 5. I was in charge. I got there fine, but got lost trying to get home. Everything looked different on the way back! A kind man saw my sister crying and me looking upset and asked if we were lost. Our swimsuits told him where we'd come from. He called our parents, gave us proper directions and we got home alright.

Yes, salt is healthier for your pool, and we use it more than straight chlorine in Florida. But think about it. The chemical formula for salt is NaCl. It breaks down into sodium (Na) and (Cl), chlorine. If you use salt, you are still using chlorine.

WaldoLydeker, that actually means break point. it's the point in which all of the free chlorine gets bound up and not available to be used to disinfect. -the uv light speeds up the process of this. when this happens in your drinking water - we actually add more chlorine- otherwise bacteria is not being taken out by the cl2. chlorine attacks bacteria and "bugs" by being free. chlorine roams the water until it sees a bacteria and then grabs it and binds to it making it inert. but once used, it's done being useful. it still stays in the water for a period of time, but no longer can fight thr good fight. those already bound are considered total chlorine. those available to still fight are called free chlorine.
