What is the common name for a cat with a tri-colored fur pattern?

I have a beautiful calico that we adopted from a shelter at age three years. She had been abandoned, found, adopted, and returned. She's loving when she wants to be, but only on her terms.

I'm 74 and have had cats all my life, but I never heard of a Calico cat.

I feel bad for the kitties in the picture. They look like a bunch of barn cats huddled up in the sun to get warm.
