I had always heard that gossamer was spider silk that was free floating and not attached to anything, while a web was silk attached to something else. Thus "gossamer wings" were free floating.

lugbúrz, don’t laugh bud! They use spider silk for your sights in your scopes on your hunting rifles. They’ve used spider silk for sights on bombers since WW 2 and will continue doing so until spiders die out.
