Bonnie
What a fascinating story! I bet they were more reliable than our Postal system today! Anddd a lot less expensive!
Angie
Player Say what!?, used to deliver mail. It is a hard job in all weather and they deserve our respect
Wannabe Vulcan
Gives a new meaning to delivering a baby.
Player Say what!?
Player #5817850, I agree and I don't work for them, nor do I know anyone who does. But if you look, really look at what it takes to mail a letter across even just one state, it's an amazing process and actually inexpensive. Some people rag on them only because they think they're supposed to.
Snance
This mailing babies is really weird. But I don't want to judge...
Liz
Player Say what!?, I completely agree!! It is truly fascinating. To be honest, I still wish people took the time to send more personal letters like they did in the past before email came about. To me, an email does not express the emotional side of a handwritten letter.

I asked my husband this question. He is a retired letter carrier. He knew the answer without hearing the choices!
Katie
I'm stuck on the part where the 8 mo. old baby was under 11 lbs.

When I was young, the prevailing attitude among parents seemed to be, "What doesn't kill the kid will make him stronger." My parents' motto was, "It'll hurt, but she'll only do it once."

nanster, The same could be said of anyone having to answer questions about a country they are not that familiar with or have not studied the history, or even the present for that matter.
nanster

I imagine that's the reason why the parents gave him up to live with relatives someone who could afford to take care of him
Artie
Montana, God I hope you're right. I mean I haven't ever heard of anything so reckless. I mean we're babies back then considered life stock?!
Artie
I'm sorry, even though I learned that this was so, it just seems so ridiculous and absurd. I mean I could see the Little Rascals, Laurel and Hardy, and the Three Stooges involved in something like this.... but, really!
Lionessa
Player #137846770, I remember. The event spawned the expression, "Going Postal."

Have a friend who is a postal worker. They work so hard that when I pass postal workers on the street, I thank them and wish them well.
LillySparrow
Snance, it was an inexpensive way to send their children to other relatives.
LillySparrow
Wannabe Vulcan, hahaha and the USPS still delivers mail via donkey 🫏 on foot in the Grand Canyon!
LillySparrow
Angie, yes, I did work for them for about 2 years but couldn’t get a regular route so moved on . . . It is the most physically challenging job I’ve had (I’ve also worked in the airlines on the ramp sometimes and that THAT was easy compared with the Postal Service!!!) God Bless the Mail Carrier’s!
Red
