What is depicted on the Mercedes-Benz logo?

It’s amazing how often this symbol is confused with the peace symbol, which is quite different. The peace symbol was originally an image of a bird’s footprint in the snow, so it has three downward strokes representing the bird’s toes.

I'd heard it was inspired by a marine sponge spicule, a structural element in some sponges.

lt looks like a peace symbol to me.
