Bonnie , Jus FYI - They are not "underwear or whatever". The traditional & proper tournament attire for Sumo is a Mawashi (Sumo Belt). You are correct regarding the non-laundered aspect. They are not laundered, for 2 reasons: 1 it is "good luck" (tradition &/or superstition), & 2 washing weakens the fabric of the garment. They are usually simply hung up to dry & air out. Many sports players, teams, spectators, etc. have their own traditions &/or superstitions that are similar, to keep the "good juju" flowing & the streak (no pun intended) continues or ends depending on the situation.

I know but they don’t change their underwear or whatever you call them! Eweeee! 😂
