jsh, Welsh people moved to Argentina starting in the 1860 after encouragement by the Argentine government who offered free land much like in the US. They were worried there language was being wiped out by the English who discouraged its use. If a child spoke Welsh at school they were made to wear a slate around their necks which read “Welsh Not”. I believe the last one wearing it at the end of the school day was caned. Now there are Welsh schools, thank goodness. I’m English and not proud of how we treated other countries including those on the British Isles.
