ATS, The Starling in the picture is an adult in winter plumage. The iridescent colouring, purple/green in the sun, is their breeding plumage, in other words spring/summer plumage.

ATS, Actually the bird in the picture is an adult starling in winter plumage. Their summer plumage is dark with an iridescent green/plum sheen when they catch the sun. They flock in sometimes huge numbers when they go to roost in the evening. These flocks are called " murmurations" and the changing shape of the flock is stunning and changes shape many times before they eventually land in their roost.

The one pictured is a juvenile as it still has brown feathers. When mature the irredescence colouring is stunning. Our garden lawn & bird feeders are often full of these cheeky birds.
