Dave, cancer is prevalent in western countries because we have reduced the risk of death of so many others: TB, influenza, small pox, parasite vectored diseases, rabies; death related to injury fixed by blood transfusion, death related to infection, antibiotics and basic surgery. Cancer, heart (CV) disease, and diabetes are next. When the other causes of death are reduced the remainder gain prevalence.
