I'm familiar with this saying. Our family has another version. If someone misses the joke, we wave our hand or the entire arm over their head as if the joke was like a plane flying over their head implying that they totally missed it.

One of my parents use to say it to us kids ! The old saying , I heard it way about in 1965 or so and I said to my daughter's in about 1985 or so ! So generation to generation !
