The black cat superstition was started by whom?

Black Cats have been much maligned. I had two. Both were beautiful and loving.

In most places outside the USA black cats have traditionally been regarded as lucky, unfortunately the superstition seems to have crept into the UK and Europe and black cats are becoming more difficult to re- home from shelters. Such a shame as the colour makes no difference and all cats are wonderful.

Interestingly, in China black cats 🐈‍⬛ are symbol of good luck and fortune. 😁

In 1233, in an official church document called Vox in Rama, Pope Gregory IX declared that black cats were "an incarnation of Satan". This led to people associating black cats with bad luck, and they were even blamed for bringing the bubonic plague. This was around 400 years before the Puritan Pilgrims even left Europe for North America! Secondly, nobody was burned at the Stake during the Salem Witch Trials.
